Where is Hadrian’s Wall?

Hadrian’s Wall is located near the Scottish-English border. It stretches 73 miles west from Wallsend and Newcastle on the Tyne on the east coast to Bowness-on-Solway on the Solway Firth in the west. Walking the entire length of Hadrian’s Wall is a popular long-distance trail.  Housesteads is a well-preserved fort with a hospital, barracks, and flushable toilets. At Heddon-on-the-Wall, a large boundary section still survives, leading east towards Newcastle and the remnants of a Roman bridge span the River Irthing.

A Short History of Hadrian’s Wall

Since AD 43, the Romans occupied Britain. By AD 85, they had pushed into Scotland, defeated Scottish clans, and established a state of emergency. The Scots, on the other hand, remained a cause of conflict for the Romans. When Emperor Hadrian assumed control in AD 117, he commissioned the building of a wall to fortify and safeguard the Empire’s northwest boundary. It is believed that three legions of infantrymen from the British army required around six years to complete the Wall in its present shape. Each battalion consisted of approximately 5,000 men. At its completion, Hadrian’s Wall featured 80 milecastles, many observation towers, and 17 larger defences.   In addition, two more buildings were placed every third mile along the Wall between the mile castles.

A milecastle was a rectangular fort specific to the Roman Empire, they were built approximately one Roman mile apart along many of the Roman-built frontiers.  A Roman mile was about 1,618 yards (1,479 m).  Today’s mile is 1,760 yards (1,610 m).

The Best Places to see Hadrian’s Wall

There are several places around the North of England where you may see the remaining parts of Hadrian’s Wall. Many are centred on the remains of the Roman Forts and the Roman Army Museum. We’ll also cover walking Hadrian’s Wall and locations close to the wall where you can see Roman museums and towns, as well as cycling Hadrian’s Wall.

1. See Hadrian’s Wall at Segedunum Roman Fort, Wallsend

Archaeological excavations a decade ago discovered the fascinating Segedunum Roman Fort, which had long been hidden below terraced buildings. Segendum means “Strong Fort” and this fort was built to guard the eastern end of the wall and to house 600 Roman soldiers.

Today, this is the most excavated Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall and you can see it at Segedunum Roman Fort, Buddle Street, Wallsend, NE28 6HR

At the site, an observation tower gives you a superb view of the well-defined original idea.  The museum has been enhanced with a restored bathhouse and a portion of the wall. The on-site museum contains artefacts that offer a historical context for life on the then Rome’s northern frontier, such as a stone toilet seat that has seen a lot of activity over the millennia.

You can truly discover the ins and outs of Segedunum Fort with a guided tour – this is the best way to see the fort and to set the scene for exploring the rest of Hadrian’s Wall.

The fort was (and is) positioned on the banks of the River Tyne near the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall, and it was the wall’s easternmost section at the time of its construction. It is the most badly devastated by time fort along the Wall, with just a few building foundations and a part of the Wall remaining.

In addition, full-scale replicas of a bathhouse and a section of the Wall may be viewed in this vast interactive museum complex. The 35-meter-tall observation tower provides panoramic views of the whole UNESCO World Heritage Site. 2. See Hadrian’s Wall at Arbeia South Shields Roman Fort

Arbeia was a large Roman fort at South Shields, Tyne & Wear, England, that has since been demolished but then partially reconstructed. It is today sited at Baring Street, South Shields, NE33 2BB.

The fort was first investigated in the 1870s. To make space for the excavation, all the contemporary buildings on the site were removed in the 1970s. The South Shields Transport Interchange is just a 10-minute walk from the excavated fort. It has the ruins of numerous granaries – supplies were brought along the border from neighbouring Arbeia. This is detailed in the little museum, which is today run by Tyne & Wear Museums.  It features remarkable archaeological finds like altarpieces with inscriptions and jewels.

As you go into the partially reconstructed fort, you will be transported to the Roman period in the heart of South Shields. View one of the most comprehensive collections of Roman British artefacts ever assembled. Many of them were discovered in and around Arbeia. They examine the interiors of full-scale rebuilt Roman structures, including the West Gate, the Commanding Officer’s home, and a soldier’s barrack building.  One of the best ways to explore is to download a free audio tour here.  If you have a group, you can take a personal guided tour – you’ll need 10 people (it’s £4 per person, so the cost is £40), but they must be organized at least three weeks before the visit. From the end of March until the beginning of October the facilities are open from 11 am to 5 pm on weekdays, from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sundays. 

3. See Hadrian’s Wall in Newcastle

Since the Norman conquest of England, the title “Newcastle” has been used to refer to the city originally known as Pons Aelius during Roman times. The town expanded during the Middle Ages because of its advantageous location on the River Tyne. It went on to play an essential part in the Industrial Revolution, receiving city status in 1882 after a period of fast expansion.

Pons Aelius was a Roman fort and town at the original eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall, now occupied by The Castle, Newcastle, until 17 AD when an earthquake devastated the town and fort. You can explore this and other parts of Hadrian’s Wall with a guided (and you’ll get a driver too) tour here.

Hadrian’s fort here was named after the bridge, which was named after Hadrian’s family members. Originally, the Wall was supposed to finish at Newcastle, providing a port for ships sailing up the Tyne to dock.

The Hadrian’s Wall Gallery is located on the ground floor of The Great North Museum: Hancock, one of Newcastle’s most visited attractions. The intriguing site, which, besides showing things unearthed along the wall, covers the construction and history of the border fortifications, is definitely worth a visit. The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm on weekdays and from 11 am to 4 pm on weekends. The museum is free and open daily.

4. See Hadrian’s Wall at Chesters Roman Fort

Chesters Roman Fort, located north of Hexham, is Britain’s best-preserved ancient cavalry fort. The Romans knew it as Cilurnum and garrisoned it with 500 men. Cilurnum is often recognized as the most important Roman cavalry fortress along Hadrian’s Wall. English Heritage maintains the site today and it’s known as Chesters Roman Fort. Here you can explore the baths and steam chamber and the extremely well-preserved commanders’ quarters. There is an excellent museum featuring items found in the fort and other points along the wall on the grounds.

5. See Hadrian’s Wall at Housesteads Roman Fort

Housesteads Roman Fort is the site of the ruins of an auxiliary fort on Hadrian’s Wall, found in Housesteads, Northumberland, England, to the south of Broomlee Lough. The fort was erected of stone in AD 124 when the land was part of the Roman province of Britannia, not long after the wall was finished in AD 122. It was the region’s first fortress. Housesteads Roman Fort is set on an escarpment and flanked by dramatic stretches of Hadrian’s Wall.  There are some incredible views here and as you tour the fort site, you can learn about life here as a Roman soldier.  There are ruins of the barracks block, hospital, Commander’s House, granaries, and communal toilets.  Once you head into the museum, though, you can see the fort brought to life in film with stunning recreations of the original Roman buildings.  The museum also houses a collection of Roman finds.  The Housesteads trail lets you explore some of the glorious parts of Northumberland National Park.  Younger (or older, we’re not judging) visitors can also dig into the dressing up box and act out what it was like for the Roman soldiers here.  Buy your ticket to Housesteads Roman Fort here.

Housesteads is one of Hadrian’s Wall’s sixteen permanent military posts. It is the most preserved example of a Roman barrier in Britain and the best place to see Hadrian’s Wall’s original features.

In the museum at Housesteads’s collection, you can see Roman shrines, dedication stones, jewellery, tableware, and weapons, which provide an insight into life 2,000 years ago. Children of all ages can dress up as Roman soldiers when visiting the site’s museum. The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm daily and tickets are £9 for adults and £5.40 for children.  English Heritage members get in for free.

6. See Hadrian’s Wall at Sycamore Gap

Sycamore Gap, also known as the Robin Hood Tree, is located in a gap between Hadrian’s Wall and Crag Lough in Northumberland, England. It is located in a stunning part of the landscape of Hadrian’s Wall. It is a very popular photographic subject, with National Geographic calling it “one of the most photographed trees in the nation.” And is owned and managed by the National Trust.  Aside from the Sycamore tree, the National Trust oversees six miles of Hadrian’s Wall. The tree was cut down by a vandal, but seedlings are growing now.

This area was utilized for filming Kevin Costner’s 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” Since that time, the tree has been dubbed “The Robin Hood Tree.” The Sycamore Gap is open all year and is entirely free to visit. Check out this and other moving filming locations in Northumberland

To get to the Sycamore Tree by car take the A1 to the A69.  Turn onto Park Lane, which becomes Military Road at the Once Brewed junction.  You’ll find Sycamore Gap just to the east of Milecastle 39.

To get to Sycamore Gap by bus take the Hadrian’s Wall bus to Steel Rigg Car Park and then it’s a 15-minute walk from there.

7. Hadrian’s Wall at Willowford near Gilsland

Willowford is the most easterly spot on the Birdoswald Roman Trail and one of the most attractive. This trail follows the Romans’ footsteps, taking you through some of the most spectacular sections of Hadrian’s Wall. Willowford is linked to Birdoswald Roman Fort by a bridge with a tea restaurant and restrooms. Both Poltross Burn Milecastle and Wall and Harrow’s Scar Milecastle and Wall are within a mile.  Willowford is managed by English Heritage, but entrance here is free.

Willowford is considered to have had a community since the time of the Romans. Nonetheless, the existing buildings were built about 1830, most likely utilizing stone from Hadrian’s Wall. The farm here has been a cattle farm for some time now.  One of the stone byres was rebuilt in 2007 into five suite bedrooms, which are currently offered as bed and breakfast accommodation.

8. See Hadrian’s Wall at Harrows Scar Milecastle and Wall

Harrow’s Scar Milecastle and Wall, built in the first century AD, is the wall’s longest remaining section, which can be seen on each side of Birdoswald Roman Fort. The milecastle, located immediately west of the River Irthing, is part of a stretch of stone fortifications built in the late second century AD. The westernmost section of Hadrian’s Wall is thought to have been made of raised turf block banks, explaining why there are so few stone relics in the Solway Firth. As one of the defences that stood between forts, Harrows Scar has a great view of the surrounding fields from its hilltop location.

It is close to Birdoswald Roman Fort, and the section of Hadrian’s Wall connecting the two is one of the most visited sections of the Roman Empire’s Great Wall. The nearby Lanercost Priory is well worth a visit. Its calm beauty conceals its complex history, which witnessed many invasions throughout the Anglo-Scottish Wars (14th-16th centuries). Visitors may now tour the relics, including magnificent cloisters and reused Roman brickwork. You can see the wall for free, but entrance to Lanercost Priory (open 10 am to 5 pm) is £6.50 for adults and £3.80 for children – join English Heritage to get free entry.

9. Corbridge Roman Town on Hadrian’s Wall

Corbridge took 350 years to evolve from a military supply point for Roman legions to a thriving civil community. People from all around the Roman Empire came together here to live, work, and trade. Corbridge was formerly a bustling town and supply depot, where Romans and locals could get food and other necessities. It was a thriving town until the downfall of Roman Britain in the early 5th century AD. Today, you can walk through the town’s streets and go back in time to witness Roman life as it was thousands of years ago. Roman armour and trinkets discovered with the Corbridge Hoard are also displayed at the museum.

The Corbridge Hoard was a significant Roman artefact, providing an unusual glimpse into life as a Wall soldier. The Corbridge Collection is the largest collection on Hadrian’s Wall. 10. See Birdoswald Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall

The longest uninterrupted piece of the Roman Wall remaining is at Birdoswald Roman Fort.   This was known as Banna in Roman times.  The fort’s outer defensive wall is the best kept of any along the wall. It surrounds the whole fort area, including granaries and five of the fort’s original gatehouses, all of which are still standing.

This site produced some of the most convincing archaeological evidence concerning what happened to Hadrian’s Wall when the Romans left the area in AD 146. Among the attractions is a new exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through the life of a Roman soldier and a café, a shop, and an activity area for children and families.

The tourist centre at Birdoswald now includes a new exhibit with various hands-on activities and the exhibition is a great way to learn about Hadrian’s Wall and the history of Birdoswald Roman Fort. The facilities are open seven days a week from 10 am to 4 pm It costs £9.90 to enter as an adult and £6.00 to enter as a child aged 5 to 17.    English Heritage members, as ever, get in for free!

11. Roman Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum

Among the most prominent sights in the area are Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum.  Vindolanda is an ongoing archaeological dig, teaching centre, and family attraction not far from the wall. This pre-Wall Hadrian garrison village, remained active until the 9th century, 400 years after Hadrian’s Wall was abandoned. Vindolanda served as a base and staging place for the soldiers and workmen who built Hadrian’s Wall.

Vindolanda includes 3D movies, a holographic classroom, and three galleries to help bring the Roman era to life. The museum, built on the Magna Roman Fort site, is near one of the best-preserved sections of Hadrian’s Wall in the world. The museum is now open seven days a week, Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 5 pm Adult entrance is £9.25 and the children’s ticket costs £5.50.

12. See Hadrian’s Wall at Brunton Turret

Brunton Turret is another English Heritage site, located about a quarter-mile south of the Hamlet of Low Brunton on the A6079, near Chesters Roman Fort. It’s one of the few remaining turret components on the Wall, 2.5 meters tall. It was built by soldiers from the Twentieth Legion, who was also in charge of the Wall’s construction. A 70-yard-long piece of Hadrian’s Wall with one of the best-preserved towers along the wall. Brunton Turret, built by Twentieth Legion troops, is a landmark on the battlefield.

English Heritage oversees Brunton Turret. It is open as a free historical attraction. The turret is open for visits every day of the year.

Top Things to See and Do at Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most stunning ancient monuments in the United Kingdom and I think that Hadrian’s Wall should be seen by everyone! Even if the structure is just a shell of its former glory, it is nonetheless impressive, and for me, a must-see in Northumberland.

1. Take a Walk – a short walk along Hadrian’s Wall

The BEST way to see Hadrian’s Wall is to take a short walk along it. It’s even better with a local guide to explain the history and really bring it to life. This EASY two-hour walk is a fabulous, but short explainer, and a great way to get into the park. It often sells out, so you’ll want to book your tickets early.

2. The Birdoswald Trail on Hadrian’s Wall

Birdoswald is home to the longest intact section of Hadrian’s Wall and substantial remains of a Roman fortress. The museum includes a full-scale model of the Wall and a fascinating presentation of both the fort’s history and the surrounding terrain. While walking or cycling the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail, there’s a tea room here where you can rest your weary legs and take in the scenery.

3. Housesteads Roman Trail on Hadrian’s Wall

The central section of Hadrian’s Wall features some of the most breathtaking vistas of the whole 73-mile route of the wall. A long stretch of Roman turrets, the massive milecastle at Cawfields, and a remarkable collection of Roman antiquities at Housesteads Roman Fort highlight this walk, which takes you through some of the quietest areas of Northumberland National Park. Explore the barracks and the hospital on your own. Take in the spectacular panoramic views of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and its surroundings from the medieval fortress’s antique public Roman toilets. The interactive museum, run by English Heritage, showcases objects formerly possessed by Roman warriors. The mini-cinema will transport you to ancient Rome.

4. Chester’s Roman Trail on Hadrian’s Wall

Chesters Roman Fort is Britain’s greatest preserved Roman cavalry fort, dating back to the first century AD. Here, you can get a feel of what life could have been like 2,000 years ago today at one of the Empire’s northern boundaries. You can also explore an outstanding collection of Roman artefacts and inscriptions uncovered here and along the Wall. The Clayton Museum, which reopened in 2016, contains a stunning collection of Roman artefacts and inscriptions that will take your breath away. Today, you can see the four major gates, the headquarters building and courtyard, the hall, and the regimental shrine.

5. Corbridge Roman Trail on Hadrian’s Wall

This section of Hadrian’s Wall runs through Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The eastern section of Hadrian’s Wall is a fascinating history trail with a rural and urban mix of remains. Continue east from Corbridge Roman Town into Heddon-on-the-Wall, a two-meter-thick section of Hadrian’s Wall. It is the longest intact wall at its intended and original length. The current village was formerly a Roman milecastle. There’s also the Denton Hall Turret. The Wall and turret foundations are visible from the A69, the primary route into Hadrian’s Wall Country. The remarkable remnants of a small temple to the local god Antenociticus may be seen in the vicus (civilian settlement) outside Benwell Fort. A stone causeway next to the temple crosses the Vallum earthwork, leading to Benwell Fort.

6. See the Corbridge Roman Hoard

The Corbridge Hoard is one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable Roman discoveries. It is on display at the Corbridge Roman Town.  The armour, uncovered during the 1964 excavations, has since influenced Roman historians’ perceptions of the period’s armour. This fantastic piece of history was discovered buried in the mud in a steel, leather-covered wooden box. It revealed a lot about our Roman forefathers’ lives. A collection of Roman armour and other equipment and the stone Corbridge Lion, whose image is used to lead youngsters through the museum, are among the museum’s most spectacular treasures. During the summer, activities are held in the open area of the old forum building.

Walking Hadrian’s Wall

In 1987, the construction known as Hadrian’s Wall was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can walk, bike, or drive to many of the Wall’s attractions, visit fascinating museums and ancient digs, or even take the Hadrian’s Wall bus, along the route.

The Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail runs the whole length of the Wall, all 73 miles.  It is best attempted in good weather and during the spring,  summer and early autumn months.  During the winter months, the pathways may become deteriorated and impossible to use; as a result, different routes that tour the museums and neighbouring locations are recommended.

Cycling Hadrian’s Wall

Although it is a relatively new addition, Hadrian’s Cycleway has quickly established itself as one of the top long-distance cycling paths worldwide in the United Kingdom. It starts at South Shields’ Roman Fort of Arberia. It travels 174 miles through Northumberland before concluding at Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast. Because it is not a mountain bike trail, it does not follow the wall through harsh natural terrain. Instead, it makes use of nearby paved roads and small traffic-free motorways. If you want to see the wall up and personal, you’ll have to park your bike and walk there.

How to Get to Hadrian’s Wall

• By Bus – A regular Arriva bus route connects Newcastle and Carlisle, including stops at Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill, Haltwhistle, Greenhead, and Gilsland. The Hadrian’s Wall Country bus also serves a large portion of the region around Hexham.
• By Car – Hexham and Hadrian’s Wall are conveniently accessible by car since they are close to the A69, which runs from Newcastle to Carlisle via Hadrian’s Wall Country. The B6318, often known as the Military Road, runs almost parallel to the A69. This road travels parallel to Hadrian’s Wall from Heddon on the Wall to Greenhead in the west.
• By Train – there are daily trains services to the area around Hadrian’s Wall – apart from on December 25 and 26 and 1st January. You can get a train from Newcastle or Carlisle to connections with the Tyne Valley Railway. This provides the best connection to the wall. If you have a National Railcard there are discounts and the Hadrian’s Wall Country Line day pass allows you to hop on and hop off as much as you want for the day, you can travel between Sunderland and Whitehaven on this pass.

1. Alnwick Castle Northumberland

For those outside the area, Alnwick is the most famous castle in Northumberland due to its starring role in the Harry Potter movies, Downton Abbey and Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.  Today Alnwick Castle is the second largest castle in England (after Windsor Castle) and is still the family home of the Percy family, the Dukes of Northumberland. A Brief History of Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle dates back to Norman times, was originally built in the 11^th century and has been the home of the Percy Family since 1309.  Alnwick Castle was originally built as border protection, it lies just 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the England – Scotland border.  There have been periods when the castle fell into disrepair and times when the castle has been home to evacuees and refugees.   Alnwick Castle is currently home to both the Percy family and students from the St Cloud State University, Minnesota, USA.  Read more about Alnwick Castle history here.

How to Get to Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle is easy to reach by road, just a mile from the A1 – just follow the signposts.  The main car park is located on Denwick Lane, the B1340.  There’s a charge of £3 per vehicle for the car park for the day, and the car park is open from 10:00, only cash is accepted.

If you’re taking the train to Alnwick Castle, then alight off the East Coast mainline from London to Edinburgh at Alnmouth Station.  Take a taxi or a bus (the X18) from Alnmouth to Alnwick, it’s a distance of 4 miles and takes about 10 minutes. Check train times and buy tickets here.

Buses run to Alnwick from surrounding towns as well as from the Haymarket bus station in Newcastle Upon Tyne (the X15 and the 18).  Alnwick’s bus station is just 5 minutes walk from Alnwick Castle.

2. Aydon Castle Northumberland

Aydon Castle is to be found on the outskirts of the Roman town of Corbridge.  This 13^th Century Fortified Manor House is virtually completely intact.  In its original form is was a simple Manor House, but following hostilities between the English and Scots, it was fortified and became known as a Castle.  Aydon Castle is recognised as one of the best examples of an unaltered 13^th century Manor house.

History of Aydon Castle

Aydon Castle was originally built as a manor house in the 13^th century by Huge de Raymes, a wealthy merchant from Suffolk.  Hostilities between the English and the Scots commenced not long after it was built and it was almost immediately then fortified.  However, Aydon Castle was pillaged and then burnt by the Scots in 1315, reseized by English rebels in 1317 and seized again by the Scots in 1346.  Aydon Castle is just 50 miles from the England – Scotland border.  In the 17^th century, Aydon Castle once again became a farmhouse and was lived in until 1966.  The property is now managed by English Heritage.  There’s more on the history of Aydon Castle here.

How to Get to Aydon Castle

Aydon Castle is located off Aydon Road, Corbridge, Northumberland, NE45 5PJ.  Aydon Castle is 1 mile from Corbridge  There is a car park at Aydon Castle for 20 cars and parking is free for English Heritage members, there may be a charge for non-members.   The car park is 100 metres walk from the entrance to the castle.

To take the bus to Aydon Castle, take the Alba or Classic service AD122 between April and November.  Alternatively, take the bus to Corbridge and walk from there.

The closest train station to Aydon Castle is Corbridge you can walk to the castle from Corbridge Train station along a bridle path on the western side of Aydon Road, which you can access immediately to the north of Corbridge bypass. Check train times and buy tickets here.

3. Bamburgh Castle Northumberland

Bamburgh Castle is found in the village of Bamburgh on the North East Coast.  It holds a stunning defensive position with glorious views over Northumberland and the coast to the Farne Islands and Holy Island.  Bamburgh Castle is a Grade I listed building that began life as a Celtic fort.  The Normans built what has become the current castle and ownership passed between various parties until Victorian times when the castle was bought by William Armstrong, an (amongst other things) arms manufacturer.  Today Bamburgh Castle remains in the ownership of the Armstrong family.

A Brief History of Bamburgh Castle

Originally known as Din Guarie, the origins of Bamburgh Castle lie in a Celtic Fort, which may have been used to control the kingdom of Bernicia from 420 to 547.  The original fort passed between Celts and Anglo Saxons several times until 590 when it was taken by the Anglo Saxons.   It was destroyed by Vikings in 993 and the core of the current castle was built by the Normans after 1066.  Ownership of Bamburgh Castle passed to the King in 1095.  The castle changed hands several times and was bought by William Armstrong in 1894 and he began its restoration.  The Armstrong Family still own Bamburgh Castle and allow it to be opened to the public.  During the Second World War, pillboxes were built in the dunes below the castle to protect it   The castle has been a pharmacy, surgery, free school and private residence.  Bamburgh Castle features in one of the Northumberland detective novels by LJ Ross – just one of the books set in Northumberland that we recommend reading.

What to See At Bamburgh Castle

One of the most magnificent things to see at Bamburgh Castle is the view.  That’s the view from the Castle itself over the Northumberland Coast, out to Holy Island and the Farne Islands and also the view of the castle from Bamburgh Beach.  The castle is a beacon from many miles away and is especially striking at dawn or sunset from the beach. There’s a lot to see at Bamburgh and we recommend arriving early (book your tickets online here).  It’s possible to buy tickets in person on the day, but buying online saves lining up) bringing a picnic, or planning to visit the onsite tea room and spending most of the day here. Where is Bamburgh Castle

How to Get to Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh is accessible by local bus services, by a train to Berwick Upon Tweed or Alnwick and it is also easy to drive to Bamburgh.

To travel by car to Bamburgh take the A1 north until the B1341 junction. Bamburgh is 5 miles (8 kilometres) from the A1.  If you are travelling from the north, take the B1342 junction from the A1.  If you have more time then the B1340 coastal road provides lovely views.  Parking is available at Bamburgh Castle for £3 per car per day and this car park is a great place to leave your car to explore the rest of Bamburgh.

The closest train station to Bamburgh is Chathill, but not many trains stop at this station.  The more regular train station to use to get to Bamburgh is either Berwick or Alnmouth.  Both Berwick and Alnmouth are on the East Coast Mainline. Check train times and buy tickets here.

4. Belsay Hall and Belsay Castle, Northumberland

You’re in for a treat if you visit Belsay Hall as you’ll get a medieval castle and a regency-style country house at the location.  Belsay Castle was built in the 14th century and comes complete with a rectangular pele tower with later additions, but the entire structure was largely abandoned in the early 19th century when Belsay Hall was built as a residence.  Belsay Hall is a regency-style country house in Northumberland.  Both Belsay Hall and Belsay Castle are managed today by English Heritage and you can visit both on the same ticket (members get in for free).

History of Belsay Castle

Belsay Castle was built in the 14^th century and is a three-storey pele tower with rounded turrets.  A manor house was added in 1614 and a further west wing in 1711, but much of this was demolished in 1872.  The Castle was largely abandoned as a residence when Belsay Hall was built from 1810 to 1817.  Both Belsay Hall and Belsay Castle are Grade I listed buildings.

Belsay Hall is the first Greek Revival style building to be built in the country.  It replaces the original Belsay Castle as a residence on the property.  Belsay Hall was built for Sir Charles Monck (who was at the time residing at Belsay Castle), with a finely dressed stone known as Ashlar and finished with a Lakeland slate roof.  From the outside it looks as though the hall has two stories, although there are actually three stories – the third being a level for servants in the roof.

Both properties are maintained by English Heritage (free entry to members) and set within stunning grounds which are maintained superbly.  The house is maintained more or less in a state of arrested decay after the house was badly affected by dry rot in the 1970’s – the building has been secured against the elements to protect the style of the architecture with only necessary structural maintenance undertaken.  It is however still a stunning building.

Belsay Hall Gardens are in themselves a Grade I listed property and are beautiful – a mixture of formal and natural gardens, through which a walk is essential – we love the Quarry Garden on the walking route to Belsay Castle!

What to See At Belsay Castle

There are lots of things to see at Belsay Hall and Belsay Castle.  Be sure to allow plenty of time to visit and try and pick a nice day as the gardens here are truly glorious.

• Belsay Hall Gardens are stunning, The gift shop will provide you with a map of the walking route through the gardens with explanatory notes on each element.
• Visit the exterior of Belsay Hall. It’s the architecture that’s interesting here – as well as understanding the issues that the dry rot of the 1970s caused.  Check when and if the interior of Belsay Hall will be open.
• Walk to Belsay Castle and explore the exterior of the original medieval castle.

How to Get to Belsay Castle

It is difficult to get to Belsay Castle by public transport.  The closest train station is Morpeth, which is about 10 miles from Belsay.  To drive to Belsay Castle take the A696 North West from Newcastle Upon Tyne.  Free parking is available for visitors.

5. Berwick Castle Northumberland

Berwick Castle is the most northerly of the castles of Northumberland.  It was built in the 12^th century by the Scottish King David, the English King Edward rebuilt it in 1296 and then it was returned to Scotland.  From this early history, it’s easy to understand that the castle is located on the border with Scotland!   The castle has also been sold – by the English to the Scottish to raise funds for the Third Crusade.  There is little that remains of the castle today, it has been in decline since the 16^th century.  Stones from the castle have been used in the Holy Trinity Church and part of the Great Hall was demolished to create Berwick Railway Station – which you should visit to see a plaque detailing where King Edward took oaths of allegiance from Scottish nobles in 1296.  Check out other things to do in Berwick with our guide here.

History of Berwick Castle

Berwick Castle is unique amongst the castles in our top Northumberland Castles.  It was the only castle built originally by the Scots rather than the English.  In 1296 the English King Edward I rebuilt the castle, fortified the town of Berwick Upon Tweed and the castle was then returned to the Scots.  The castle changed hands – between the Scots and the English many, many times over the centuries, and the castle fell into disrepair and ruin from around 1590 onwards.  The primary remaining part of the castle itself is that of the White Wall – and a set of steep stairs known as the Breakneck Stairs.  The castle is maintained by English Heritage and entry is free.

What to See At Berwick Castle

It’s worth taking time to see the plaque at the Railway station in Berwick as we’ve mentioned and we recommend seeing the following

• Walk a full circuit of the ramparts – there are interpretation boards which explain the defences and history.
• Access the ramparts at the Berwick Upon Tweed Barracks – they’re well worth a visit in themselves and are also managed by English Heritage. (Entry is free for members – join here)

6. Chillingham Castle Northumberland

Located in the village of Chillingham in Northumberland Chillingham Castle dates from medieval times.  Chillingham Castle is a Grade I listed building and is the home of Sir Edward Humphry Tyrell Wakefield, who married into the Grey family, who have held the castle since the 15^th century.  The Castle remains in private ownership and visiting includes access to the grounds which are home to a rare breed of white cattle, the Chillingham cattle.

History of Chillingham Castle

The medieval Chillingham Castle was built in the 12^th century and was fully fortified in 1344 when a “license to crenellate” was issued by the English king (so battlements were added at this point).  Chillingham was used often as a staging post for battles with the Scots, but as times changed and relations between the Scots and the English became more peaceful the use of the castle changed.  The moat was filled in, the battlements were converted to residential use, a library and banquet hall was built and the grounds were landscaped. The garden here is truly magnificent and it’s included in our guide to Northumberland’s Best Gardens.

During World War II Chillingham Castle was used as an army barracks and following the war the castle fell into disrepair until it was purchased by Sir Humphrey Wakefield in 1982.  Areas of the Castle are now open to the public and there are also holiday rentals available here too, so yes you can stay in parts of the castle.

Visit Chillingham Castle’s gardens, grounds and woodland walks, which are open all year.  The design of the garden dates from 1828.

7. Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland

Dunstanburgh Castle was built in the 14^th century as a fortification on the Northumberland Coast by the Earl of Lancaster primarily as a statement of wealth and influence.  It is a unique property in that the castle is built on land managed by the National Trust but the ruins themselves are managed by English Heritage.  This means, happily, that members of both organizations get in for free.  Dunstanburgh Castle played a key role in the Wars of the Roses and was maintained until the 15^th century.  It was reported from the 16^th century that it had fallen into decay.  Today little remains, several towers, and the outline of the castle provides for an excellent walk on the Northumberland Coast from the villages of Craster and Embleton.

History of Dunstanburgh Castle

There was originally an Iron Age fort on the site that Dunstanburgh Castle now occupies, although the current castle is the remains of a 14^th-century building.  Built by the Earl of Lancaster it’s likely that he only ever visited once – he was opposed to King Edward II, ended up being captured at the Battle of Boroughbridge and was then executed and Dunstanburgh Castle passed to the Crown and then into the ownership of the Duchy of Lancaster.

While the castle was maintained and even reinforced up until the 15^th century, as it was a strategic stronghold during the Wars of the Roses, it fell into disrepair by the 16th century.  As relations between the Scots and the English became more peaceful Dunstanburgh Castle was sold.  The Grey Family owned it for a few centuries, as it became increasingly ruined and it passed into the ownership of the state.  During World War II Dunstanburgh Castle was used as an observation post.  Today the castle is owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage, which means that members of both organizations get in for free.

What to See At Dunstanburgh Castle

One of the best things to see at Dunstanburgh Castle is the coastal walk to get there.  The castle is only accessible by footpath from the nearby villages of Craster or Embleton.  Most visit from Craster.  (My guide on Craster is here) The trail is easy and the terrain is flat, but not particularly even.  The twin-towered keep is a magnificent entrance to the castle and affords excellent views from the top.  There are composting toilets at Dunstanburgh Castle, but no facilities apart from a very small gift shop.  Buy drinks and food in the village at Craster, including the famous smoked kippers.

How to Get to Dunstanburgh Castle

Dunstanburgh Castle is found 8 miles north-east of Alnwick and on footpaths from Craster or Embleton.Park in the Council Car Park in Craster (chargeable, take coins).  Buses to Dunstanburgh are the Arriva service X18 Travelsure 418. Take the bus to Craster and take the coast walk for 1.3 miles. The nearest train stations to Dunstanburgh are Chathill, not Sunday, 5 miles from Embleton, 7 miles from Castle; Alnmouth, 7 miles from Craster, 8 1⁄4 miles from Castle. 8. Etal Castle Northumberland

Etal Castle Northumberland was built about 1341 by Robert Manners.  It originally comprised a gatehouse, a corner tower, and a residential tower protected by a curtain wall.  Etal Castle has a long history of being involved in the border wars of Scotland and England.  It became part of the border defences in 1547 but then was abandoned as a military fortification in 1603.  Etal was used as a domestic dwelling until the 18^th century and then fell into ruin.  Today, Etal Castle is owned by the Joicey family but is managed by English Heritage.

A Brief History of Etal Castle

Although the Manners family had owned the manor in Etal since 1232 a license to crenellate – or fortify was not granted until 1341 when Robert Manners began to build defences against the threat from Scotland.  The oldest part of the structure of Etal Castle was the residential tower and by 1350 the tower was surrounded by a manor, mills, lime kilns and coal mines.  In the 16^th century, the Manners family moved away and left the castle in the stewardship of the Collingwood family.   1513 saw King James I of Scotland taking the castle, and its restoration to the English following the Battle of Flodden the following month.  Over the next 30 years, the castle fell into ruin and was purchased by the English Crown in 1547.  By the time King James VI of Scotland inherited the English crown in 1603 the castle had lost military value and became a private residence.  By the 18^th century, it ceased to be a residence and was simply a picturesque ruin.  Today Etal Castle is managed by English Heritage and is a Grade I listed monument.

You’ll gain the most from visiting the exhibition here that details the Battle of Flodden (before you visit Flodden) – the grounds of Etal Castle are a pleasant place to have a picnic too.

How to Get to Etal Castle

Follow signs from Berwick, or drive to the village of Etal Northumberland.  There is parking at the entrance. The closest train station to Etal is Berwick, which is 10 miles away.  Bus services are run by Glen Valley/Perrymans – the service number 267 Berwick-upon-Tweed – Wooler. 9. Lindisfarne Castle Northumberland

Lindisfarne Castle not only was a defence in the border wars between England and Scotland but also came under attack from the Vikings too!  The castle, which is managed by the National Trust is found on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland Coast.  The castle has changed hands many times over the years, been sketched by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and then came into the private ownership of a published magnate in 1901, Edward Hudson, who then commission the architect Edward Lutyens to redesign the castle as a private residence.  Famous garden designer Gertrude Jekyll designed the walled garden.

History of Lindisfarne Castle

Lindisfarne Castle was built in 1550 as a defence of the island against the Scots and the Vikings.  Many of the stones used in the construction of the castle came from the recently ruined Lindisfarne Priory.  A fort built below the castle on Beblowe Crag between the years 1570 and 1572 forms the basis of the current castle.  In a similar fashion to that of Etal Castle, when King James unified the thrones of Scotland and England the requirement for Lindisfarne Castle as a military stronghold declined.  Lindisfarne Castle was occupied for a few days in the 18^th century by Jacobite rebels.  The castle has been used as a coastguard lookout and a tourist attraction until it was bought by Edward Hudson in 1901.  Architect Edward Lutyens redesigned the castle as a private residence alongside Gertrude Jeykll in the gardens.  The National Trust has managed Lindisfarne Castle since 1944 along with the gardens and the nearby Lime Kilns.

Where is Lindisfarne Castle

Lindisfarne Castle is located on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.  The castle is a 15-minute walk from the village and the entranceway into the castle is steep.

How to Get to Lindisfarne Castle

The easiest way to get to Lindisfarne Castle is to drive.  Take the A1 to the Beal crossroads – 8 miles south of Berwick upon Tweed.  This crossroads is near to the Lindisfarne Inn (a good option to stay if you don’t want to stay on Holy Island) and is signed for Holy Island.  The causeway is approximately 1.8 miles (2.9 kilometres) from the crossroads.  The causeway itself is one mile long (1.6 kilometres) and parking for Holy Island, on the island is 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometres) from the end of the causeway.  We can’t emphasize enough how important it is to check the Holy Island Tides

Day visitors to Holy Island also all have to access via the causeway and so that also causes some congestion.  A daily parking ticket bought here can also be used in Berwick, Wooler and Seahouses.   There is a minibus that goes from this car park to the castle, which is about one mile away.

• 3 hours-  £6.50 
• 4 hours-  £7.50
• 5 hours-  £8.50
• All day- £10.00

If you’re planning to visit Holy Island by bus then you’ll need the 505 or 515 services that run between Newcastle Upon Tyne and Berwick Upon Tweed.  They stop at Beal crossroads on request – so ask the driver then you get on.  From Beal crossroads, it’s a 4.8 mile (7.7 kilometres) walk to the village on Holy Island, including crossing the causeway which is a mile long (1.6 kilometres).  The local 477 bus route runs from Berwick Upon Tweed station during the summer, but you must check the timetables.  There is also a Holy Island Shuttle Bus that runs to Holy Island, this is run by a local taxi company and again, please check, it is an intermittent service and depends upon demand.  There are details here, but it’s best to call them to find our details for when you plan to visit.

Lindisfarne Castle Opening Times

Normally, National Trust Lindisfarne Castle opening times vary depending on the tides and are usually either 10:00 until 15:00 or 12:00 until 17:00, you can check opening times here.

10. Norham Castle Northumberland

Blink and you might miss Norham Castle – or rather you have to go out of your way to find it, but it’s a glorious surprise all the same.  Managed by English Heritage, but free to enter for all it’s well worth downloading the free to download audio guide of the castle.  Norham Castle is situated on the River Tweed and on the border of England and Scotland.  It was founded in 1121 to protect the bishopric of Northumberland from the Scots.  King David I of Scotland captured it in 1136 and so began a rather unstable period when the castle passed between conquerors.  There’s little left today, but ruined walls and the hint of history, but it is atmospheric all the same and you’ll likely see few visitors here.  The audio guide is well worth downloading, and so is visiting on a good weather day!

History of Norham Castle

Once one of the most important border strongholds Norham Castle is set on a high grassy mound overlooking a ford over the River Tweed.  Its history includes many attacks by the Scots, it has been besieged 13 times, once by Robert the Bruce for almost a year!

The best history of Norham Castle is understood as you are walking around.  We recommend downloading the audio tour – it’s free – from English Heritage before you get to the Castle.  The total tour lasts around 20 minutes and can be paused.

What to See At Norham Castle

Walk around Norham Castle to the accompaniment of the free audio guide from English Heritage and you’ll see history come to life at Norham.  The setting of the castle above the River Tweed is nowadays idyllic, but it’s easy to picture the fierce history that this important border castle once had.

Northam Castle is found in Norham Village, 6 miles south of Berwick Upon Tweed.  Take the A698, then the B640 and follow the signposts.

How to Get to Norham Castle

It is easiest to drive to Norham Castle, take the A698 from Berwick Upon Tweed and follow the signs to the B6470 towards Norham.  The closest train station to Norham Castle is Berwick Upon Tweed.  Buses run from Berwick Upon Tweed railway station to Galashiels, get off at Norham.  Car parking is signposted at the castle. 11. Prudhoe Castle, Northumberland

Prudhoe Castle is located on the northern bank of the River Tyne in Northumberland.  The first castle here was a motte and bailey type and dates from the middle of the 11^th century.  The history of the castle has been dominated by two families, the Umfravilles who were granted the barony of the area by Henry I and then, when the last of the Umfraville line died out, the Percys.  A glorious entry to Prudhoe Castle takes you past a millpond and through a gatehouse.  The inner wards of the castle are surprisingly intact and rather lovely to explore.

History of Prudhoe Castle

Prudhoe Castle was originally built as one of a series of castles by the Normans following the 1066 Norman Conquest of England and the castle was continuously occupied for more than 900 years.  It’s been home to the Umfraville and Percy families and is the only castle in Northumberland not to fall to the Scots.

While the first castle here at Prudhoe has been shown to be a motte and bailey construct from the 11^th century, the stone castle was likely built in the 12^th century.  It was during the ownership of the castle by the Percy family (the widow of the last Umfraville married Henry Percy, the first earl of Northumberland), that they added a great hall to the castle.  The principal seat of the Percys was Alnwick Castle and Prudhoe was likely rented out to tenants.  It wasn’t used as a residence after the 1660s and is reported to have been in a “ruinous state” in 1776.  The Percys carried out major repairs between 1808 and 1817 and it was at this time that the Georgian Mansion replaces the old buildings inside the walls.  In 1966 the Castle was given to the Crown and is now managed by English Heritage.

Follow directions to Prudhoe and take the minor road signposted for Prudhoe Castle.  Free car parking is available just 70 metres from the castle entrance.  The closest train station to Prudhoe Castle is Prudhoe, less than a quarter of a mile away.    Go North East buses 10, 11A, 686 all go to Prudhoe. 12.Warkworth Castle Northumberland

Warkworth Castle is located in the glorious village of Warkworth in Northumberland.  Both the castle and the village are found in a loop in the River Coquet which meanders its way to the North Sea close by.  The castle has remains from the 13^th century, a gatehouse from the 15^th century and really is a rather magnificent ruin, with some well-maintained areas.  There are four towers in a rather irregular design and the castle is built on top of a mound (motte).

History of Warkworth Castle

First documented in a charter from 1157-1164, Warkworth Castle was originally a timber castle that was considered “feeble”.  It was improved upon and the remains seen today date from the 13^th and 15^th centuries.  The keep was added in the late 14^th century and when the last Percy early died in 1670 the castle went to Hugh Smithson, who married into an indirect line of the Percy family.  He then adopted the Percy name and founded the Dukes of Northumberland, whose line the castle then descended to today.  The castle was refurbished in the 19^th century and has been managed by English Heritage since 1984.

What to See At Warkworth Castle

The Castle Walls at Warkworth Castle offer stunning views over the River Coquet and over the Northumberland Coast.  Don’t miss the various rooms in the cross-shaped keep.  When open be sure to visit the Hermitage, a short walk and boat ride away from the castle (separate entrance fees apply, and it’s also free to English Heritage members).  Pick up the audio tour to understand more about Warkworth Castle and its history and don’t miss

• The Cross-Shaped Keep – built more than 600 years ago.
• Spot the often carved lion badge – the emblem of the Percy family throughout the Castle.
• Visit the Duke’s Rooms (if open) – restored by the Percys in the 1850s- some of the gold patterned leather that once lined the walls still remains.
• Visit the Hermitage when open and see this private chapel for the Percy Family, a lovely walk up the river, and then a free boat ride across.

Take the A1068 from Alnwick southbound.  Parking is available at the castle itself.  Parking is free for members although charges may apply for non-members.  There is additional parking at the beach in Warkworth.  The closest train station to Warkworth Castle is Alnmouth, which is 3.5 miles away – and which is a lovely walk – it’s part of the Northumberland Coastal Walk.  Warkworth Castle is served by the Arriva X18 bus between Newcastle and Alnwick & the Travelsure 472 bus. You can pretty much figure out that this series is set in Northumberland by the covers.  And Louise, who goes by LJ Ross is one of the female authors from the northeast of England, having been born in Northumberland. Her first book in the DCI Ryan series, Holy Island starts with a retreat to the island set just off the Northumberland coast.  His sabbatical leave is cruelly interrupted as a body is discovered within the grounds of Lindisfarne Priory.  The series moves around throughout Northumberland and several different locations get to be the star of the novels, he even heads down to Durham and High Force at one point.  Great crime fiction that sets the locations at the heart of the story.

4. Paula Hawkins – Into the Water – based in Northumberland

I loved Hawkins “The Girl on the Train” – and this is Paula Hawkin’s second full-length novel – and was delighted to find that Into the Water is based in Northumberland.  The town in the novel, Into the Water, is, however fictional.  It might not have received the critical acclaim that The Girl on the Train did, but it’s a great read with a mix of twists and turns. And no, I couldn’t put it down until I finished it!

5. Sharon Bolton – Dead Woman Walking – starts in Northumberland National Park

I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen a hot air balloon in Northumberland, but I didn’t let the start of this novel put me off as it provides some excellent descriptions of Northumberland National Park and this is, after all, fiction.  There are seriously clever plot twists in Dead Woman Walking, great overviews of the landscapes and amateur as well as professional sleuths involved.  You’ll not only want to pick up the next of Bolton’s books, but you’ll also want to head to the National Park and see the landscapes for yourself!  This is a great and thoroughly enthralling book by the last of our featured Northumberland crime writers. We’re taking a step back in time now from more recent Northumberland fiction to this from Mary Stewart, published in 1961 in the UK.  The novel, a suspenseful romance begins very firmly in Northumberland with Hadrian’s Wall overlooking Crag Lough.  The settings and descriptions in the Ivy Tree are picturesque and you won’t be left wondering what’s about to happen at the end, but again, the setting of Northumberland and the somewhat complex plot kept me interested until the end.

You simply can’t talk about books set in Northumberland without mentioning the Percy Family.  This series of books from Wensby Scott is now out of print, but I’m mentioning it just in case you manage to find one in the library or a charity shop.  Ignore the covers, they don’t do the books justice.  I first read this series – Lion of Alnwick, Lion Invincible and Lion Dormant – more than 30 years ago.  And they fired my imagination for the wilds of Northumberland and the history of the Percy family.  The lions are the symbols of the historic Percy family (see their emblem on the walls at Warkworth Castle) They definitely assume that you know a lot about the history of the area, but that’s a great excuse to go and pick up a history of the Percy’s and find out more! Sir Walter Scott – Rob Roy

This 1817 historical novel by Sir Walter Scott was set most likely in 1715, the first of the first Jacobite uprising.  Much of the novel focuses on the England – Scotland border area of Northumberland.  Scott clearly travelled to the area – he’s also famous for his Rokeby poem, set in Teesdale, just a little to the south near Barnard Castle. 1. Bamburgh Castle Beach, Northumberland

This long beach overlooks the magnificent Bamburgh Castle and is one of the most picturesque beaches you’ll find anywhere in Northumberland.  On a clear day, you can see as far as the Farne Islands and Holy Island. Beautiful sand dunes back the beach, and taking a stroll along this beautiful beach is a must. There are miles of flat-packed sand here and it takes a little over an hour to walk to Seahouses, which is around 4 miles away.  There are toilets, cafés, a restaurant, and a pub in Bamburgh village.

I’ve said for years that this is my favourite beach in the entire world. That view hasn’t changed despite travelling to more than 100 countries.

• Are dogs welcome at Bamburgh Beach? Yes.
• Is there a lifeguard at Bamburgh Beach?  No.
• Where is the car park at Bamburgh Beach?  There’s parking at the Beach Car Park, the Further Beach Car Park, Bamburgh Castle and the Links Car Park.  There is some free parking in the village, but the car parks charge. (Links Road car park charges from 08:00 until 18:00 – £10.00 for all day).

2. Alnmouth Beach, Northumberland

The lovely Alnmouth is a beautiful place to spend a day at the beach. Alnmouth beach is a sandy beach ideal for sandcastle building.   In summer it’s a great place to play games, in winter it makes for a fabulous place for a stroll. If you’re staying in the lovely Rothbury, then this is a great beach to visit.

Swimming is not usually recommended at Alnmouth, and it is specifically dangerous near the river mouth while the tide is falling. There are signs warning not to approach the river’s mouth, much alone attempt to cross it. There’s more on Alnmouth and what to see and do in my guide here.

There are public bathrooms at the beach car park and a cafe in the village.

• Where is the car park at Alnmouth Beach?  Alnmouth has a huge public car park directly on the seafront. After entering the village, take the Wynd, and then the first left again as you go down the hill. The seafront car park is not accessible in the Spring and Summer season when an attendant collects before entering the golf course.

3. Embleton Bay Beach, Dunstanburgh

With sand the colour of soft caramel and the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance on the headland, Embelton Bay Beach is both wild and gloriously picturesque.  There are rock pools galore here, which is one of the reasons that this is a popular family beach in Northumberland.  The other is that it’s accessible by car on the Northumberland Coastal Route.  You can swim here, bird-watch and it’s great for kitesurfing too.  The Ship Inn in Embleton is fabulous.

• Where is the car park at Embleton Bay Beach? Walk along the shore or inland from Low Newton-by-the-Sea or Craster. The main option for parking is the golf course nearby, but you can also drive or walk from Embleton’s South End along Primrose Lane to a car park at Dunstan Steads.

4. Seahouses Beach, Northumberland

Seahouses is an excellent place to get a glimpse of the grand old seaside holiday. The beach here in Seahouses is backed with grassy sand dunes and it’s enormous. Seahouses itself has a small harbour, with boats taking trips out to the Farne Islands, and some great gastro pubs, a superb fish shop, where you can buy some Northumberland smoked fish specialities and the usual fish and chips shops too.

There are actually two beaches at Seahouses, the long one, aka St Aidan’s, which runs up towards and connects with Bamburgh Beach and then a smaller one to the south.  Both Seahouses’ beaches are great for families and are right next to the town and all its amenities.

• Where is the car park at Seahouses Beach?  Seahouses has multiple large car parks. The ideal parking is immediately on the seafront, off the main road for off-peak or early arrivals. However, extra parking is on the harbour wall and behind the public restrooms.

Portside. This glorious holiday home has fabulous views of the beach, and when you’re done walking the beach, building sandcastles, surfing, or even just heading into the village, then its the perfect place to relax. There’s more here.

5. Beadnell Beach, Northumberland

Because of its proximity to the gorgeous village of Beadnell, Beadnell Beach is a firm favourite with families.  There’s a long stretch of white sand and the beach is reliably clean.  The super team at KA Kitesurfing are based here, and this is a great beach for watersports, with kitesurfing, wakeboarding, jet skiing and sailing available here.  Towards the quay, near the village, there is a more sheltered area, which is good for swimming and sand castle building.  Despite its popularity, Beadnell beach is rarely crowded. 

Beadnell Beach is also popular with wildlife.  The largest breeding colony of Arctic terns in mainland Britain has made their home here.  They nest in the sand dune grasses, so you’d be wise to give them space.  About halfway along the beach, there’s a hut that’s manned by the National Trust, which watches over the terns and this is the best place to see them.

There are toilets and washing facilities in the car park, another point in favour of this family-friendly beach in Northumberland.  If you decide to stay in Beadnell, then the beach is within walking distance and my guide to Beadnell is here.

6. Druridge Beach, Northumberland

Druridge Beach, with its seven miles of sand bordered by grassy dunes and a wealth of wildlife right on its doorstep, is, without doubt, one of the most stunning beaches in Northumberland and one of the most deserted.  It is most popular for walkers, so while you might get some passing “traffic”, you’ll likely have a lot of the seven-mile stretch of beach to yourself.  Located as part of Druridge Bay Country Park and visitor centre, it’s easy to get.

• Where is the car park at Druridge Beach?  There are three car parks throughout the park, the biggest of which may be located at the far end of the entry road, just across from the visitor centre.

Head to the Golden Sands Holiday Park and you’ll be smack bang in Cresswell Beach and Drurudge Bay Beach. Fabulous. You’re spoiled for choice here.

7. Ross Back Sands Beach, Northumberland

Ross Back Sands is one of the most excellent beaches in Northumberland if you’re searching for peace and alone time. It’s a 1-mile walk, through Ross Farm, and from the closest car park to get there, and the distance discourages most people.  The views and isolation here are amazing though.  There are views of Holy Island, the Farne Islands, and likely Bamburgh Castle too.

This is a great Northumberland beach for wildlife spotting.  Seals, gulls, grebes and terns are spotted regularly here. Bring your binoculars and camera.

• Where is the car park at Ross Back Sands?  To access the beach, park your vehicle at Ross Farm and walk down the road through the farm buildings and cottages, across the fields, and finally through the sand dunes to the beach.

The best place to stay near Ross Back Sands, is actually across the bay from it, you can see it at least. And you’ll be in Budle Bay, which is glorious. Kittiwake Cottage is a fabulous place to pick as your base for Ross Back Sands.

8. Warkworth Beach, Northumberland

Located north of Amble, in the charming town of Warkworth, those in the know go to this beach for its spectacular sunsets, deserted ambience, very clean sand, and peace and quiet. From Birling Carrs to Amble, this magnificent length of sand beach offers stunning views of Coquet Island and the surrounding countryside. It’s just a 15-minute walk from Warkworth, which sits on the edge of the River Coquet, to Warkworth Beach.  Our favourite way to visit is to take the coastal path between Alnmouth and Warkworth. • Where is the car park at Warkworth Beach?  Following the main road north of Warkworth into the village, cross the bridge and take the first lane on your right. There is a parking lot approximately 1/4 mile on the right. The beach is reached through a trail across the dunes.

9. Low Newton Beach, Northumberland

There’s something particularly charming about this beach, which is backed by cream colour cottages and the most excellent Ship Inn pub.  Views of the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance don’t hurt either!  Low Newton Beach is popular for dog walkers, and there are a couple of great walks here – heading north to Beadnell you’ll likely see dolphins and seals  Or you can head south around the headland to Embleton Bay.

• Where is the car park at Low Newton Beach?  There is a small public car park on the crest of the hill before entering Low Newton. Depending on the period of the year, there may be a lengthy queue of vehicles parked on the left before you approach the parking lot. The locals park here since it is free and just a short walk to the beach.

Eastfield. The views are to die for. The facilities are fabulous. And well, yes there’s that beach. Book it now before it goes.

10. Coves Haven Holy Island, Northumberland

This isolated and little-known sandy beach is situated on the far northern side of Holy Island. It is accessible only by boat or on foot. The beach’s eastern end is protected by steep cliffs. In addition, when the tide recedes, there is an abundance of rock pools to explore.

In my final recommendation I’m going for Cambridge House Cottage. You can’t stay right close to the beach, but this is a perfect location. and its a snug and cosy cottage. The island is glorious after the day trippers have gone, so you’ll want to reserve your place to stay well ahead of time.

There is a good deal of variation to pick from when it comes to beaches in Northumberland. 1. Visit the Farne Islands in Northumberland for a Unique Experience

The Farne Islands are a group of 15-20 islands off the coast of Northumberland.  The number of islands depends on the state of the tide and the islands are located from 1 ½ miles to 4 ¾ miles from the shore.  The Farne Islands are managed by the National Trust, but boat trips to the Farne Islands are run by private organisations, mainly local companies from Seahouses, Northumberland.  (check out our guide to all there is to do in Seahouses here). The Farne Islands are home to a huge population of birdlife and sea life and a trip there is unique and glorious. We recommend taking a Farne Island Boat trip that allows landing on Longstone Island in order to visit the Longstone Lighthouse which was the home of Victorian-Era heroine Grace Darling, who, along with her father led a rescue from the wreck of the steamship the Forfarshire to save 9 people from certain death.

The wildlife around the Farne Islands is stunning and unique to this area of Northumberland.  You’ll also want to make time to visit the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) museum in Bamburgh and understand more about the life of Grace Darling and what you can do to be safe in the waters off the coast of Northumberland. 2. Visit a Castle in Northumberland

Northumberland is at the border with Scotland, and boy have there been a lot of skirmishes and battles, and that means there are a LOT of castles in Northumberland.  There are more than 70 castles in Northumberland.  What you need to do is pick your castle.  Or castles.  We wrote about the 12 most magnificent castles in Northumberland here, but if you’re only going to visit ONE castle in Northumberland here’s our shortlist of 3 and why we picked each one.

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland: It’s gorgeous, it’s stunning, the gardens are amazing and Harry Potter was filmed there.  If you have kids, it’s most likely the best castle to visit in Northumberland.

Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland:  The castle at Dunstanburgh is a ruin and you can only get there on foot but it’s a glorious coastal Northumberland walk.  It’s atmospheric and moody and for me, it’s my favourite castle in Northumberland (despite breaking my wrist while visiting there) and that is primarily because of its location, right on a rocky coastline.  Dunstanburgh Castle is managed by English Heritage on National Trust land – members get in for free. (join now and save money here). I’d put Dunstanburgh Castle at the top of my list of castles to visit to see in Northumberland. And I say that despite having broken my wrist here!

Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland:  The castle at Bamburgh holds an amazingly beautiful position, right on the Northumberland coast and inside the grounds of Bamburgh Castle there are a HUGE amount of things to do there (you’ll need a LONG day to see it all) and it’s also located right next to the BEST BEACH in Northumberland and possibly IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.  There’s more on what to do in the village of Bamburgh here.

3. Visit Holy Island, Northumberland

Holy Island or Lindisfarne is one of the must-see places in Northumberland.  The island of Lindisfarne is accessible only via a tidal causeway and remains cut off for most of the tide.  Holy Island dates back to the 6^th century and became an important centre for Christianity with Saint Aidan recognised as bringing Christianity to this part of England. 

Walking to Holy Island – across the sands on the Pilgrim’s Path – is a glorious way to get here – and you can join a small group tour and ensure that you make the walk safely.

The ruined Lindisfarne Priory is beautiful and contains a huge amount of history in the heritage centre here.  The priory at Lindisfarne is managed by English Heritage and members get in for free (you can join English Heritage here – use code EH2020 for a 15% discount).  Lindisfarne Castle is also a must-visit on Holy Island – managed by the National Trust, there are stunning views from the castle walls and the garden design is quite incredible.  As the access to Holy Island is only via the tidal causeway it’s absolutely essential to plan your visit here based on the tides.  Our guide to Holy Island details everything that you need to know.

For a seriously local experience on Holy Island, you should stay overnight and see what the island is like after the day-trippers leave. There are a variety of places you can stay, from bed and breakfasts to hotels and holiday cottages.

4. Visit Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland

Hadrian’s Wall stretches from Wallsend on the East Coast of England to Bowness in Cumbria and was built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian in AD 122 to protect the areas of England that the Romans controlled from those who might attack it (primarily at this time the Picts).  One of the great ways to see Hadrian’s Wall is to walk the 73 miles (135 kilometres) from coast to coast, but if you don’t have enough time for that, then there are a variety of other ways to see this Northumberland UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

The BEST way to see Hadrian’s Wall is to take a short walk along it. It’s even better with a local guide to explain the history and really bring it to life. This EASY two-hour walk is a fabulous, but short explainer, and a great way to get into the park. It often sells out, so you’ll want to book your tickets early.

Housesteads Roman Fort is set on an escarpment and flanked by dramatic stretches of Hadrian’s Wall.  There are some incredible views here and as you tour the fort site, you can learn about life here as a Roman soldier.  There are ruins of the barracks block, hospital, Commander’s House, granaries, and communal toilets.  Once you head into the museum, though, you can see the fort brought to life in film with stunning recreations of the original Roman buildings.  The museum also houses a collection of Roman finds.  The Housesteads trail lets you explore some of the glorious parts of Northumberland National Park.  Younger (or older, we’re not judging) visitors can also dig into the dressing up box and act out what it was like for the Roman soldiers here.  Buy your ticket to Housesteads Roman Fort here.

Corbridge Roman is an English Heritage managed site that enables you to walk through a Roman town ruins. The museum explains how life was here in Roman times and you can also explore the weapons and armour of Roman soldiers.  There are more details about Roman Corbridge here. 5. Take a Walk in Northumberland

Whether you like to walk for a short time or take multi-day hikes, Northumberland has it all.  The Hadrian’s Wall Walk stretches 73 miles and goes from the coast in Wallsend through Northumberland and into Cumbria to end on the west coast.  It’s a truly glorious and often wild hike that takes several days.  The Northumberland Coastal Path is truly one of the most gorgeous coastal walks in Europe.  The coastal path in Northumberland stretches along the coast of Northumberland for 62 miles (100 kilometres) from Berwick upon Tweed (check our awesome guide of what to do in Berwick here) in the north down to Cresswell in the south.  There are beaches, rocky headlands, cosy villages and stunning castles.  We love the stretch that runs between Bamburgh and Amble. 

Talking a walk in Northumberland has to be our favourite of the free things to do in Northumberland and, if you plan your walk, it can take you to some of the best places to visit in Northumberland.

There are hundreds and hundreds of miles of public footpaths throughout Northumberland and into the National Park – the best way is to navigate them is with an Ordnance Survey Map – although we prefer the digital version – you can download offline maps with the OS Map from £2.99 a month > try it for free for a week here.

The path to Holy Island across the sands has been a pilgrimage route since 635AD. The road to Holy Island wasn’t constructed until 1954 and the tall vertical poles were the only markers to the island.  Following the Northumberland Pilgrim’s Way (this is a PDF document with more details) from the mainland to Holy Island is a unique walk in Northumberland.  You MUST take great care when taking this route – and be especially mindful of the tide times – always walk on a FALLING tide and let others know when you are leaving and what your expected arrival time is. You can always join a small group tour and walk the Pilgrim’s Path safely.

6. Explore Northumberland National Park

Northumberland National Park is one of the least visited in England, there are low levels of population and a huge amount of wildness.  England’s least populated National Park is excellent for hiking with more than 1100 kilometres of public footpaths through the park and it’s the most magnificent of places in Northumberland to visit for free.  Our guide to the Northumberland National Park is here. Water sports feature heavily too, with Kielder Reservoir providing for water skiing, sailing and canoeing.

Perhaps because of its remoteness, the National Park is superb for planet and star spotting.  It also means that there are things to do in Northumberland National Park after dark. Northumberland National Park is an official Dark Skies site – where you can both star spot independently and attend organized guided events.

It is easiest to explore Northumberland National Park by car and it’s easy to access, the A696 from the A1 near Newcastle will take you straight to the park.  Bus services operate during the summer months only with the AD122 bus linking the major attractions in Northumberland National Park.  Northumberland National Park makes an appearance in the openings of a novel by Sharon Bolton – it’s one of our must-read books set in Northumberland – and there are more books about Northumberland here.

7. Take in World Class Gardens in Northumberland

Four of the UK’s most stunning gardens are to be found in Northumberland – they’re a great combination of art and nature.  Some are formal, some are more natural, they’re all beautiful outdoor spaces in Northumberland that you should explore at some time in your trip.  Here’s our pick of Northumberland’s best gardens – there’s more in our full guide here.

• The Gertrude Jekyll Garden at Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island was created in 1911 when the castle was overhauled by architect Lutyens to turn it into a private residence. Managed now by the National Trust, the walled garden combines annuals, heritage vegetables and colourful perennials in a year-round oasis. There are 8 National Trust Properties in Northumberland, which makes it worth looking at membership options.
• Belsay Hall Gardens: located within the grounds of Belsay Hall and Castle, these gardens are recognised as a Grade I listed property.  They’re a glorious mix of formal and natural and it’s well worth visiting in different seasons because they constantly change.  There’s a designated walking route through the gardens with explanatory notes about what you’re seeing.  Our favourite is the Quarry Garden, which feels like you’re entering a secret world. You’ll rarely see a crowd here and that makes it one of the most glorious Northumberland places to visit.  The gardens at Belsay are managed by English Heritage and entrance for members is free – join here now to save. 

• The 12 acres of magnificent gardens at Alnwick Castle are a fabulous outdoor location for all the family to enjoy. The world’s largest Tai Haku Cherry Orchard combines with waterfalls, a treehouse restaurant and the poison garden for a unique day out.  The Alnwick Garden also comprises a rose garden and a number of seasonal activities throughout the year. • Combined with the Castle itself and the connection with the Harry Potter film franchise this makes it one of the stunning must see places in Northumberland. There are HEAPS of things to do in Alnwick, read our guide here.
• There are few Northumberland destinations more stunning than Cragside, one of the top things to see in Rothbury. This was the first private house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and the gardens were then and are not equally innovative.  Start by exploring the formal gardens, visit one of the largest rock gardens in the world and step into the Pinetum and see the conifers that were planted more than 140 years ago towering above you.  This combination of gardens is truly magical and has been managed by the National Trust since 1977. 8. Try and Spot Unique Wildlife in Northumberland

In a county that has low population density, there’s little wonder that Northumberland is a fabulous place for wildlife to thrive.  And there are ample opportunities to see some of England’s more unique species in their natural habitat.  Make a plan to find some of Northumberland’s favourite residents. Many of these can be seen in Northumberland National Park, which means that you can combine some of the best walks in Northumberland with wildlife spotting.

The Native Red Squirrel – constantly under threat from the bigger and more aggressive grey squirrels, England’s native red squirrels have found a home in Kielder Water and Forest Park.  You can join professional naturalists in Kielder on a Red Squirrel Safari or simply explore yourself and be sure to report any sightings.  Explore all there is to do in Kielder in our guide here.

Chillingham Wild Cattle – this herd of around 90 cattle are the sole survivors of herds that once roamed the ancient forests of Britain.  They’re said to be rarer than Giant Pandas and are one of the unique things to see in Northumberland. You can see them at Chillingham Castle.

Grey Seals and Birdlife – take a trip from Seahouses out to the Farne Islands and you’ll see a huge amount of both birdlife and grey seals who make their homes on this group of islands.  Boat owners from Seahouses are great at pointing out specific species and varieties for an educational and fun trip.

If you’re in Amble you can also take the opportunity to head out on a working fishing boat. The Natalie Kristen II is a lobster and crab working fishing boat in Amble. They fish every day – weather permitting and from Easter onwards each year they take tourists out to see the wildlife at Coquet Island. But you’ll also get to to see Kevin and his crew haul a couple of fishing pots to see how shellfish are caught. You’ll get close enough to touch before they’re released back into the North Sea. Ham and Pease Pudding Stotties:  You can buy the ingredients for this from any supermarket in Northumberland (and much of the North East of England).  A stotty is a large round flatbread that’s usually cooked in the bottom of the oven.  It’s dense and has a dent in the middle.  Cut your stotty in half, spread with butter and pease pudding (a smooth paste made from boiling split peas) and layer on chunks of cooked ham.  It’s filling, fabulous and usually a love or hate relationship.

Smoked Kippers from Craster Northumberland:  Kippers are smoked in the curing sheds and using secret century-old recipes in both the Swallowfish and L Robson & Sons smokehouses.  Smoked kippers are traditionally a breakfast dish in Northumberland, eaten with chunks of homemade butter brown bread.  You can buy them from the Robsons restaurants and takeaway in Craster, (read more in my guide to Craster here) or the Swallowfish delicatessen in Seahouses.

Lindisfarne Mead:  Mead from Lindisfarne is a fortified honey wine combined with local spring water, fermented grape juice, hers and spirits.  Legend has it that the monks who lived on Holy Island made it.  You can taste before buying at St Aidan’s Winery on Holy Island and then buy bottles of various flavours and types to take home with you.

Have a cup of Earl Grey Tea in Northumberland:  Prime Minister, the Earl Charles Grey not only passed the 1832 Great Reform Bill, which introduced major changes to the electoral system in England and Wales, but he also was responsible for the creation of Earl Grey Tea.  The tea was blended specifically with bergamot oil to offset the strong taste of lime in the water at his seat, Howick Hall and Gardens.

10. Pick at least one of Northumberland’s Magnificent Beaches to visit

There are more than 30 miles of beaches in Northumberland.  Some are in seaside towns like Seahouses and are easy to get to.  Others like those on Longsands Island on the Farne Islands are visitable only by boat and specific permission.  There are beaches within Nature Reserves, like those at Budle Bay and rock and crab pools all along the coast.  Dog walkers are welcome on many beaches in Northumberland, horse riders too.  You’ll find miles and miles of hard-packed sands hidden behind dunes.  What’s perfect about beaches in Northumberland is that you’ll always be able to find a place for yourself.

Our favourite beach in the entire world is in Northumberland and it’s very easy to get to.  The beach at Bamburgh is vast, wild and gloriously wild for most of the year.  Come along some time and experience it.  On a fine sunny calm day, the beach is stunning, but we love it too when the wind is howling and the sea is wild, there’s definitely never anyone else around then…

4. Visit Whalton Manor Gardens, Northumberland

Whalton Manor is a beautiful 17th-century manor with 3 acres of walled gardens designed by Sir Edward Lutyens for Mrs Eustace Smith in the early 20th century with influence from Gertrude Jekyll. Tours of the gardens are provided for both groups and individuals. Lutyens and Jekyll collaborated to create a little jewel, a landscape of endless inspiration, highlighted by elements like a game larder, pergolas, a stone-paved courtyard, and an Italianate summerhouse. The manor was considerably remodelled by architect Edwin Lutyens in 1908 when he was also working on the Tudor castle of Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island. He meticulously rebuilt the manor’s interiors, keeping the plastered ceilings and Georgian panelled chambers. The nearby West Manor House was once part of Whalton Mansion, completed in 1729, but is now an entirely different home. A circular bedroom on the first floor of the Manor is modelled after the Viceroy’s royal chamber in New Delhi.

The Castle on Holy Island was renovated into a vacation home by Edwin Lutyens. He was a regular collaborator and friend of Jekyll, whom he called ‘Bumps.’  And so Jekyll built a garden with a lowered wall on the Castle side that would blossom into a riot of colour in the summer for Edward Hudson’s guests to enjoy from the Castle using the position of a vegetable patch that had provided food for the soldiers at the Castle. The mix of hardy annuals, colourful perennials, and heritage veggies offers stunning looks and fragrances in the summer and a green, sheltered oasis all year.

Howick Hall is a magnificent eighteenth-century house with a terrace and wooded grounds. It is built on the concept of transitioning from terrace to grass to forest garden. Rhododendrons and other acidic bushes are planted in the latter. Until 1973, Howick was the Grey family’s ancestral home. In 1832, the second Earl Grey (2nd) became Prime Minister and instituted significant election changes. Earl Grey tea is named after him.

Early summer is the ideal time to appreciate the intimate workmanship of this small but much-acclaimed rural Northumbrian Garden, which was built from the ground up around a derelict 16th-century farmyard. The magnificent Herterton House Gardens took 40 years for painters Frank and Marjorie Lawley to plan and cultivate – a lifetime endeavour that continues to thrive. The Lawleys’ knowledge and resourcefulness with hybridized and wild plants and their sensitivity to structure and pattern are shown with a strict free spirit. Some of the knapweeds and hesperis grow unusual white variants of wild rosebay willowherb and rose campions. Hoverflies, butterflies, and bees thrive as elegant veronicas, circiums, and self-seeded poppies flow down little passages. Making their way through precisely trimmed box swirls and buttoned columns in the floral arrangement. Even the walls become green, covered with waistcoats of ivy that follow the outline of a window or door with maximum accuracy. It’s no surprise that it’s been called a “living piece of art.”

The garden is a rare 1828 survivor and was designed by royal designer Sir Jeffry Wyatville, fresh off his royal victories at Windsor. The urns and sculptures are contemporary composite reproductions that create an aura of uniqueness. Northern England’s famed herbaceous border is the longest in the country. In ancient times, the far wall, which was fifteen feet thick, served as a jousting “grandstand,” wrapped initially around the castle grounds. The castle, set in lovely gardens, has magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, including small farmsteads and the picturesque magnificence of the Cheviots. There are lakes, wildlife, and valuable and well-recorded trees for specialists. You may sometimes spot the famous herd of Wild Cattle in the distance. Deer, red squirrels, and badgers are lurking in the woods, waiting to see whether you’re fortunate (and be quiet!). There are also foxes and rabbits and a variety of bird and plant life that is unaffected by pesticides and poisons.

Dilston Physic Garden is a Northumberland Garden dedicated to planting power and plant medicine. It’s a one-of-a-kind location that’s great for a stroll or bringing the kids. Dilston Physic Garden is located in Northumberland, just outside of Corbridge. It was rather simple to get there by car. A Physic Garden is a garden where every plant that grows can cure or keep you well. On 2 acres of ground, there are approximately 700 strong plants to explore. When you arrive, you may pick a trail map to follow (which is free with entry – extra trail maps are 50p each), although getting lost is tough. There are only six Physic Gardens in the UK; therefore, I believe Dilston is a rare and unique area for everyone to enjoy. The garden is overflowing with plants that improve both physical and mental health. Above all, I found it to be a pleasant and soothing place to visit. This, I believe, was one of the garden’s primary goals, and it has unquestionably been met. There are several quiet spots for meditation and reflection and a designated silent seat. The garden really mesmerizes you in nature.

The Farne Islands are located just off the coast of Seahouses and you should make a beeline for these beautiful islands.  Boat trips to the Farne Islands are one of the best things to do in Seahouses and they’re stunning.  Sir David Attenborough says that the Farne Islands are his favourite place in the United Kingdom to view wildlife – and you can see plentiful birdlife, seals, and puffins, depending on the time of year that you visit.

2. Visit Hadrian’s Wall on a day out in Northumberland

Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches 73 miles from the east coast to the west coast, was built to protect the Roman Empire’s wild north-west boundary against the marauding Scots. Explore the ruins of the forts, castles, turrets, and communities that once stood guard above the Wall.

There are HEAPS of places to see Hadrian’s Wall – it is after all 73 miles long! But the BEST way to see and experience Hadrian’s Wall is to “go roaming with a Roman”. A small group 2-hour walking tour is a fabulous way to get an introduction to the wall, and its history and you’ll get hints and tips for all the other great places to see the wall. There are more than 20 different Hadrian’s Wall locations, including Housesteads Roman Fort, Chesters Roman Fort, Corbridge Roman Town, and Birdoswald Roman Fort, which will help you to learn about the Wall’s rich history and magnificent nature.

Here are some of the key areas to visit Hadrian’s Wall.

• Housesteads Roman Fort – Housesteads Roman Fort was a massive infantry fort built along the route of Hadrian’s Wall until it was destroyed in World War II. It was garrisoned by a unit recruited from Belgium, and it was occupied for almost 300 years until being abandoned. As a result, it is the most intact of any Roman fort in the United Kingdom. It provides a unique glimpse into Roman military activities.
• Corbridge Roman Town – In AD90, the (now) town of Corbridge was selected as the location for an enormous Roman fort intended to guard a bridge over the River Tyne. The museum displays items such as Roman armour and trinkets that were discovered with the Corbridge Hoard. The Hoard is among the most important archaeological discoveries in Roman history. It provided us with a remarkable glimpse into a warrior’s life on the Wall at the time of its discovery.
• Chesters Roman Fort – Cilurnum is often regarded as the strongest Roman military fort along Hadrian’s Wall. It was located near the town of Cilurnum. The site is currently known as Chesters Roman, and it is maintained by English Heritage, which means that members get in for free.. All four of the fort’s main gates, as well as the headquarters and courtyard, as well as the hall, and regimental shrine, can still be seen today.

• Birdoswald Roman Fort – Birdoswald is the location where you can view the longest remaining length of Hadrian’s Wall and significant remnants of a Roman fortress. Some most compelling evidence for this may be found in Birdoswald, where the succession of hall-type structures was discovered on the site of the Roman granaries.

3. Go to Holy Island for a day out in Northumberland

Holy Island, aka Lindisfarne, is a small tidal island off the coast of Northumberland in the northeast of England, a few kilometres south of the Scottish border to Scotland. Holy Island is reached by an ancient tidal causeway, so it is only accessible at certain points of the tide.  There are some great things to do on Holy Island, but if you’re just here for the day, then take your pick of these.

• Lindisfarne Castle – One of the most visited places on Holy Island is Lindisfarne Castle. It was established in 1550 to protect the island against invasion from both the Scottish and the Vikings. Many of the rocks used during the construction of the building came from the earlier monastery, which had been abandoned.  The castle is managed by the National Trust, members can enter for free, otherwise, entry is £8.50 for adults and £4.25 for children.

• Gertrude Jekyll’s Gardens – When visiting Lindisfarne Castle you can also explore the beautiful gardens planned by Gertrude Jekyll, a well-known landscape designer who constructed the area which previously functioned as the castle’s vegetable garden in 1911. The gardens are found close to the castle’s northern walls. Perennials, heritage vegetables, and annuals create a riot of colour in the summer and refuge of quiet throughout the year, paying homage to the original concept.
• Holy Island Lime Kilns – Holy Island is also home to some of the most well-preserved lime kilns in Northumberland. The quick lime made here was used as a whitewash for masonry and as fertilizer for the surrounding fields.
• Lindisfarne Priory – a place of pilgrimage for many over the centuries, the “Rainbow Arch,” is the most notable section of the priory ruins still remaining. You’ll see it after entering the grounds via the ruined west door of the Lindisfarne Priory, which is also located on the Holy Island. Although the tower above it collapsed over two centuries ago, this arch has remained standing. Lindisfarne Priory is managed by English Heritage and entry costs £8.10 for adults or £4.80 for children.  Members get in for free – and you can join here.
• St. Aidan’s Winery – The St. Aidan’s Winery is located on Priory Lane, behind the Village Hall on Holy Island. It is an excellent place to experience local artisan products. Lindisfarne Wine, also known as Lindisfarne Mead, is an alcoholic fortified wine made on Lindisfarne from ripened white grapes, honey, herbs, and water collected from the island’s well. Mead has been produced and sold commercially in this region since 1962.
• St. Mary Parish Church – The Parish Church of St Mary’s serves the whole island. In addition to having some remnants of the ancient Saxon church on site, the church also has a wooden sculpture portraying the transport of St Cuthbert’s coffin to Durham from Holy Island after Viking invasions.

4. Have a day out in Bamburgh in Northumberland

Close to the northern border of Northumberland and on the North East coast, Bamburgh is a small community in a beautiful location. It is undeniably dominated by the magnificent Bamburgh Castle, which can be seen for miles around and gives a dramatic mood to the whole area.  Don’t miss these fabulous things to do in Bamburgh.

• Bamburgh Castle – Bamburgh Castle, which stands on a high cliff 45 meters above the town of Bamburgh, is one of England’s largest preserved castles and one of the country’s most spectacular monuments. Because the castle was designed to be impenetrable, the walls are up to 4 meters thick in certain places. The Armstrong family presently manages Bamburgh Castle, bought in 1894 by Victorian industrialist and weapons maker William Armstrong.

• RNLI Grace Darling Museum – The Grace Darling Museum at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution honours a brave young woman who became famous as a result of her endeavours to save lives along with her lighthouse-keeper father. Details of Grace’s upbringing at the lighthouse are recounted in a museum and documentary that shows there, along with the rescue that made her a national heroine. • St. Aidan’s Church – St Aidan’s Church commands an excellent site in Bamburgh. Whatever your religious beliefs are, it is well worth visiting just for its environment. Inside the church, there is also a statue of Grace Darling on display, as well as her tomb in the churchyard.
• Bamburgh Beach – I’ll say it now.  You should come to Bamburgh for the beach alone.  It’s the best beach in the world.  Bar none. Many visit Bamburgh for the superb surfing conditions, which are regarded as some of the most consistent along the coast. Sand dunes, located behind the beach, are home to a vast diversity of vegetation and fauna, including some very rare insects. It is absolutely beautiful from whichever angle you choose to look at it. The coastline and the Farne Islands are also stunningly gorgeous from this vantage point. And of course, it’s overlooked by the glorious Bamburgh Castle too.

5. Go to Howick Hall for a day out in Northumberland

Howick Hall Gardens will appeal massively to garden enthusiasts, and this is in a county with some stunning gardens to visit!. The gardens at Howick Hall are a plantsman’s paradise, with huge grounds containing a fantastic range of unique plants that bloom throughout the year. The forest garden is filled with wildflowers and creates a beautiful exhibit. The magnificent Howick Hall, that the gardens belong to, was formerly the residence of Lord Grey. He served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834. Also, at Howick Hall, you’ll find the origins of the famed Earl Grey tea mix, which was created just for the earl here.

6. Go to Northumberland National Park for a Day out in Northumberland

Northumberland National Park is the most northerly and remote of the 13 National Parks in England and Wales, and it’s also the least visited and least inhabited.

It is the place to some of the best tranquil hidden jewels, most isolated pathways, and most breathtaking natural wonders in the country. The peaceful landscapes of the park can be explored on hikes, bike riding, stargazing at night, and even watching wild Cheviot Goats.  There’s much, much more on things that you can do in Northumberland National Park in our guide here.

7. Go to the Beach for a day out in Northumberland

With miles of coastline, Northumberland has something to offer everyone. From vast sweeping bays that are great for brisk walks to secluded coves that become beautiful, if often windswept sunspots during the summer.   There’s more on Northumberland’s best beaches in our guide here, but here are 3 to get you out and about for the day in Northumberland.

Alnmouth Beach – Alnmouth beach is located on the north side of the River Aln.  And just beyond the beach, lies the charming tiny town of Alnmouth, where I spent many a summer day as a child. Generally speaking, swimming at Alnmouth beach is not encouraged. It is challenging (aka dangerous) at the river. My guide to Alnmouth is here.

Embleton Bay – Embleton Bay is a long expanse of golden sand bordered by the towering remains of Dunstanburgh Castle, which provide a stunning backdrop. This is one of the most glorious and wild beaches in Northumberland to explore.

Beadnell Bay – Located south of the village of Beadnell, this broad beach is a horseshoe-shaped bay with clear water. The beach itself is a popular site for swimming and various water activities such as surfing, sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. Check out my guide to Beadnell and all there is to do there.

8. Have a day out at Kielder Water and Forest Park in Northumberland

Kielder Water & Woodland Park, which includes England’s largest forest and the largest man-made lake in Europe, is a paradise for bikers, hikers, and outdoor lovers. Wildlife abounds, and the area boasts some of the greatest dark skies in England. Kielder is also the most significant red squirrel reserve in England. 9. Go to Alnwick for a day out in Northumberland

Alnwick is one of the loveliest market towns around.  There’s lots to do in Alnwick, a day won’t be enough, but if that’s all the time you have then head for the Castle.  Alnwick Castle is among the most beautiful and historically significant castles in the country. Of course, it also helped local tourism that Alnwick Castle was made (even more) famous with the Harry Potter movies, starring as Hogwarts.  You’ll also find the world’s biggest Treehouse, green spaces, poison garden, rose garden, and amazing water sculptures at Alnwick Garden. 10. Go to Cragside in Northumberland for a day out

Cragside is a glorious Arts and Crafts House, the first to be powered by hydroelectricity. Lord William and Lady Margaret Armstrong were responsible for the building of Cragside and they created a truly pioneering house.  As well as the house, the garden here is stunning.  It’s one of the top Northumberland gardens to see (there’s more here), but you should make time to see:

The Formal Garden – a south-facing three-acre plot of land that overlooks the Coquet Valley, this garden is divided into three levels, this spectacular garden has been meticulously restored to match the original arrangement of Lord and Lady Armstrong’s design.

The Pinetum takes advantage of great growing conditions for coniferous trees and there are some glorious examples of pines from all over the world here.

11. Visit a Castle on a Day out in Northumberland

We have more than our fair share of castles in Northumberland – and you can read more about Northumberland’s top castles here, but here are my four favourite castles to visit on a day out in Northumberland.

Warkworth Castle – Sitting high above the River Coquet, Warkworth Castle is stunning and a glorious place to visit.  The castle has remains from the 13^th century, a gatehouse from the 15^th century and really is a rather magnificent ruin, with some well-maintained areas. You’ll want to also see the cross-shaped keep and take the boat trip up to the Hermitage. Bamburgh Castle – Bamburgh Castle stands above my favourite beach in the entire world and overlooks the pretty village of Bamburgh.  There’s heaps to see at this castle, and you will need a lot of the day to see it!

Dunstanburgh Castle – The ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle are gloriously romantic and I say that even after having broken my wrist here!  (Watch for the uneven ground!) You should explore the gatehouse and climb to the top of the tower for spectacular views of the jagged coastline.

Lindisfarne Castle – Holy Island’s Lindisfarne Castle is a masterpiece. It was initially built as a temporary fortress for troops before being converted into a private residence after 1901. It’s imposing, stark and really rather beautiful.

12. Go to Berwick upon Tweed for a Day out in Northumberland

Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland’s most northern town, lies barely 3 miles from the Scottish border and is a great place for a Northumberland day out. Make sure you start a visit to Berwick with a walk around the town’s Elizabethan walls, explore the (very) ruined castle and spend time in the Barracks.  Don’t miss the Berwick Cockles…
